Wind in Your Sails

Sailing lessons with COSA

Wind in Your Sales gives youth the opportunity to experience the unique and challenging sport of sailing with qualified sailing instructors. A variety of programs options exist through the Central Okanagan Sailing Association.

This program is offered by COSA in July/August.

Who it’s for

Youth 10-18 years old who would like to learn to sail with the Central Okanagan Sailing Association, with the support of Elevation Outdoors!

What to expect

Participants get an opportunity to learn and experience the joys of harnessing the wind and cruising across Lake Okanagan with the sun shining down and the splash of water on their faces. Starting with the foundations of sailing, participants will learn how to skipper their own boat and sail with confidence.

Elevation Outdoors does not facilitate Wind in Your Sails directly. Interested participants will choose an eligible program through COSA and, upon meeting eligibility criteria, Elevation Outdoors will provide funding for eligible youth to participate in a COSA program on a full or partial scholarship.

What you’ll learn

Youth will be working towards Sail Canada CANSail 1 or 2. Almost all instruction will be on the water, with youth paired in their very own 14’ FJ sailboat. Sailors will learn the basics of sailing on and off the water, including:

  • Terminology
  • Water safety
  • The ability to rig and de-rig the boats independently
  • The skill to launch, set sail, and return to the dock.

By the end of the program, students will be able to sail around Okanagan Lake safely. Fun is an important part of this course, with age appropriate games and activities including kayaking, paddle boarding, and Hobie Cat sailing!

Dates

Youth can sign up for programs being offered by COSA in July/August each year. Spots are available on a first come first serve basis. Once COSA has sold out their programs, spaces are no longer available, so register early to ensure your spot!

Cost

The program is offered free of charge to eligible youth that meet our eligibility criteria. Partial funding may be available for families that do not meet scholarship criteria but still face financial barriers
